Myspace- a Way of Life

May5

Just in case you’ve missed the World Wide Web boat, MySpace.com is the latest craze among the Internet generation, enabling them to keep in contact with both new and old friends, high school and college classmates, as well as friends of friends, their favorite band, and the friends of their favorite band. This entire connection can be done without stepping foot outside of a front door or picking up a telephone. It’s become an addiction- a way of life for so many that it’s a wonder how previous generations ever got along without it.

When an interested party signs up for a free MySpace account, they basically are entitled to create their own, personalized page on the site (called a profile), view the profiles of other members and “add” them to their “friends list”. Once someone has accepted you as a friend, you can post a “comment” on the appropriate spot on his or her profile page. “Bulletins” may be posted by one member and will be seen by all friends. Pictures and videos can be added to any profile for all friends to see, all to make a profile unique and a reflection of oneself.

But there’s hardly a web surfer in cyberspace that isn’t at least mildly concerned with Internet safety, especially when it comes to kids. The creators of MySpace couldn’t agree more and have established rules and regulations for all members to follow. Any picture or graphic deemed unfit by the MySpace team will be deleted, and the profile of the poster may be expelled. There are also minimum age requirements and advanced security settings for anyone to adjust. For example, you can have your profile set so that only those on your friends list can view it, and any potential friend needs to know either your last name or email address for the request to be sent.

Blogging, which is short for web logging, is an online journal for a “blogger” to write whatever they’d like to see (and have others see) on the World Wide Web. MySpace has seen the rise of blogging and added it to the website for members to use if they wish. All posts on blogs are visible to anyone who can view a profile.

Of course, the craze doesn’t stop with having the most friends or pictures. Having a MySpace profile page that’s a mirror of the owner’s personality is just as important, if not more so. Interesting and colorful backgrounds and sparkling graphics are available that would raise the eyebrows of Bill Gates. The favorites of movies, music, celebrities and snack foods are plastered all over the MySpace profile pages of fans across the globe. And don’t forget; changing your page more often than you change your socks is quite the growing trend, as “keeping up with the Joneses” requires the latest in technologies.

How to Motivate yourself

May5

Some people believe that successful persons are made, not born. Yes, it is true that some people are born with natural talents, but there can be no true success without practice, without experience, and without – motivation. We all dream big dreams and have great ambitions. However, for many people dreams remain just that – dreams. They get caught up in the monotony of living from day-to-day, just barely existing.

There are countless negativities in our lives, so how do we keep motivated? For some people, pain or humiliation are the reason to change, fight and improve themselves. For others, it is some bitter experience, or a great movie, or an inspiring book. Here are some universal tips, important for anyone who needs motivation:

- Always try to avoid negative people and places. Just ignore those people who want to destroy you. Don’t let bad people to get the best of you. Stay away from those who hate to hear about your success.

- Hang on to your dreams. Let your dreams be your driving force. Visualize yourself in success.

- Be positive. Positive thoughts are invigorating. People around someone carrying positive thoughts are always energized by this type of attitude. A positive attitude attracts people, while a negative attitude repels them.

- Be yourself. That is the key to success. You are unique. No one in the world acts, looks and talks like you. Value your life – you are just going to spend it once.

- Write down your “to-do-lists”. If you want to achieve your intended goals do not rely just on your “mental” lists.

- Read inspirational and self-development books and e-books and apply what you learn.

- Listen to motivating music. Create a playlist to listen to when you are depressed.

- Place motivating posters, photos, signs and quotations in your house and your office.

Finding Dad the Perfect Gift

May5

Shopping for Dad always seems pretty easy. He always seems to like whatever you give him. Why not make it special and really give him something to smile about this holiday season.

One suggestion for a gift for Dad might be the traditional tools. A man can never have enough tools for projects around the house. By giving him his favorite tool, one could achieve several things. First, he gets a smile on his face. Second, your home projects might actually get done. Finally, he has a toy of his own.

Another gift idea would be electronics.

These would range from MP3 Players/IPODs to GPSs and TVs. They are all great ideas. MP3 Players/IPODs can be taken everywhere and can plug into his car or treadmill. He will enjoy his music while he is either driving or running. Maybe even watch a game or movie on his IPOD. Of course the game would look even better on a brand new television. There are plenty of options between LCD, Plasma and Projection TV. Don’t forget the GPS. Men, especially Dad, will not want to ask for directions this holiday season. Save him the trouble with a new GPS system. This way everyone gets where they need to go safely and on time.

Moms are always expected to look nice for the holidays. Well men are starting to take their personal hygiene seriously. There are plenty of products out there to help Dad look and feel his best. These can range from new electric shavers, to nose trimmers, to fog-free mirror in the shower, and maybe even a massage toy to help Dad relax after a long day. All these would contribute to Dad looking and feeling better during the holidays. Dad may even want his favorite cologne or hair product. Surprisingly more and more men are starting to really take an interest in how they look and smell. I am sure moms appreciate this.

Sports, many argue, are the man’s domain at home. Why not spoil Dad this holiday season with tickets to go and see his favorite team play? Another suggestion could be sports memorabilia. Does Dad have a favorite team or player? Maybe get him a poster, jersey, signed card or ball. Maybe Dad doesn’t watch sports, maybe he likes to play. This holiday, upgrade his sports equipment. He will think of you every time he plays. Or maybe Dad doesn’t play sports, but enjoys the competition of a good poker game. Give him something to play this winter like a poker set, table and a poker book. The game is so hot right now and he can invite his buddies over for a nice friendly home game.

Apparel and accessories for Dad work well as a holiday gift. Great suggestions could be a new jacket, work out clothes, sweaters, or even a nice tie! Dad should really throw away that old holey shirt and you can replace it with one from his school alma mater. Maybe he could use a nice black sweater or ski jacket to keep him warm and in style. Watches are also a nice addition to Dad’s wardrobe. They are both functional and contribute to that finished look that makes Dad look complete.

All of these suggestions of holiday gifts I am sure will put a happy face on Dad. Some you can enjoy as a family and others Dad can enjoy by himself or with his buddies. After all, holiday gifts are wonderful to receive and put to use and with these suggestions you will surely not disappoint dear ole Dad.

A Review of the NuSkin Income Opportunity

May5

The NuSkin Company was amazingly started by a brother and sister, Blake Roney and his sister Nedra Roney. They also had a friend Sandi Tillotson. Blake had just graduated from Brigham Young University in 1984, when they decided to start a business. They had only $5,000 among them to start their personal care product. That was then, and look at the company now. In 1996, after some incredible growth, the company went public and was listed in the NY Stock Exchange.

For two decades now the company has been creating products and building a company that can deliver these products to millions of customers. NuSkin has products that treat the skin for problems such as aging, complexion problems, or just wanting healthier skin.

NuSkin has a line called Pharmanex. This line carries products for weight management, nutrition and vitamin supplements. They have produced the Bioscan S2, which scans your body for weaknesses and gives you an average age of your body and how it compares to your real age.

They are also Big Planet, which has come into the digital photography age and provides an opportunity for distributors to offer ways to store your digital photographs, organize them and even make home movies. This program, I have actually been involved in. It was a bit to get involved. I loved being able to send in my old photos and having them scanned for me. They were put on a disk as well as put on my site online.

The drawback was I had to spend so much a month. In order for me to qualify for my bonus, a $100 needed to be automatically withdrawn out of my account, and then I was given credits for my photos, whether I wanted to use it for scanning, or making posters, mugs, etc. I ended up having to quit, because I was making less than I was spending. There really weren’t any sales involved, it was mainly focused on recruiting. In the 4 months that I was involved, I probably went to 10 meetings and a convention in SLC, UT that cost me almost $400.

The products with NuSkin are excellent. They provide excellent service as well and there is a great amount of support and training for the representatives. They stay close with those they sponsor and will even help you do presentations. But this program was the same as all the other I tried, and I did try. I really believed this one would work for me. I did invest a lot of my time and energy.

I invested what money I had in the videos to show, had products made for myself to show as samples. I involved my family and my friends. They were all very supportive and really wanted to see this one work for me. Everyone signed up for his or her space on the Internet, but no one was interested in buying the kit. The reason was, once you commit to buying the kit, you are committing to that $100 a month withdrawal. That is a big commitment when you are just getting by.

NuSkin, as I have said before, is a good company, but it works like any other network marketing company. They focus on recruiting and this focus is above and beyond the products. The products are the vehicles to get to your destination.

Make sure this is what you want, check the fine print. Know what you are willing to pay and to give up to make this work. This is pretty saturated in my area where I live now, so it has slowed down a bit. Do your research and before you make up your mind. There are better ways out there to make some money, working on your own. Keep searching.

Saving nations from financial raiders

Wendell W Solomons

CityVista_gmail.com

In brief

Piracy once roamed the seas. That was the status quo. History says that queen Elizabeth I authorised naval commanders, including Sir Walter Raleigh, to plunder merchant schooners. Over time, piracy at sea seriously interfered with the trade of merchants. They promoted the development and acceptance of conventions by countries against sea piracy and it was outlawed.

In contrast, modern rules that had been developed to prevent invasion of the economy by financial raiders were set aside. The Anglo-American alliance, represented from 1976 by Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher, gradually removed safeguards that held back financial raiders. Thirty years onwards several large banks have become mistrustful because of unprecedented fraud in financial markets.

In Germany today, chancellor Angela Merkel stands in the forefront of the EU movement for bringing back rules so that trade between countries can flow without unusual price hikes. In addition, survival in many a nation will require rationing and state planned distribution for efficient use of basic goods such as food.

The Chicago school of monetarists – which substantiated invasions by financial raiders – was not able to persuade China to put aside its central planning system. Therefore, this large developing country will cope better with the world economic recession.

Ex-Warsaw pact countries including Czechia, Poland and Russia use budgetary systems today that can be reinforced by activating their own planning resources. Specialists in planning in the Germany’s east can also share the experience, which helped raise the economy from 1945 after destruction in the war.

On the other hand, today’s trade flows will be hurt by nations that rely solely on high level financial planning. The monetary crisis of 1997, which hurt Japan, South Korea and other US allies in Asia, brought up the issue of financial terrorism. At what seems like the tail end of a string of events, the names of financial organisations prominent in the Western hemisphere, receive mention in connection with the loss of immense resources.

Full Report

Every writer on economic themes must at some moment quote Adam Smith. So did the Chicago monetarists when during the last 30 years their plans advised removing safeguards and allowing financial raiders in. Citing reforms for a free flow of capital, they let people choke on rogue instruments that included the shares, bonds or securities of WorldCom, Enron and AIG.

“Economics” was known in statecraft. Yet, the 18th century granted Adam Smith, Professor of Moral Philosophy at Glasgow University, an eminence surpassing all others. Two millennia earlier Aristotle, serving as tutor to Alexander the Great, had been using the term ‘Oikonomika’ (dictionaries derive ‘economics’ from the Greeks.) Further east, advisor Kautila, serving Indian royalty, evoked several volumes entitled ‘Artashasthra’ (‘Worth Treatise’.)

It is in year 1757 that we track down the facts that contributed to the eminence that Adam Smith obtained. That year saw Benjamin Franklin, a prominent scientist and statesman, asked to account for the wealth of the American colonies across the Atlantic. Here are words recorded when Benjamin Franklin was called to speak before the British Parliament on the wealth of the colonies:

“That is simple. In the colonies we issue our own money. It is called Colonial Scrip. We issue it in proper proportion to the demands of trade and industry to make the products pass easily from the producers to the consumers. In this manner, creating for ourselves our own paper money, we control its purchasing power, and we have no interest to pay to no one.”

Franklin’s words regarding currency in Parliament alarmed private financiers.

The financiers union, the Bank of England had been incorporated on July 27, 1694, as a joint-stock association with a capital of £1.2 million. The company received the right to issue notes and a monopoly on corporate banking in England ? in return for an immediate loan to the king of the entire treasure. They had calculated that such treasure would never be returned whereas interest from the king’s treasury would keep accumulating in their hands in perpetuity. Through this action (1) the king would become an accessory of their company and (2) in their receiving authority to print and issue banknotes as counterpart to the treasure ? their power would advance in the land by leaps and bounds.

After Franklin’s words on an economic theme, the financiers sped into counter-attacking the American colonies. They had to force the colonies to give up the idea of issuing their debt-free currency, a competing product. In consequence their Bank of England won over Parliament and King George III signed the Currency Act of 1764 to decree that the colonies stop printing their own money. Staging financial terrorism, the bankers also saw to the dispatch of shiploads of counterfeit Colonial Scrip to contribute to economic depression in the colonies.

Benjamin Franklin pioneers study of electricity of lightning storm [picture]

Benjamin Franklin recorded, “In one year, the conditions were so reversed that the era of prosperity ended, and a depression set in, to such an extent that the streets of the Colonies were filled with unemployed.”

This led the colonies into warfare with Britain and two decades later the rebels decided on the unilateral declaration of independence on 4th July 1776.

The government of George III however continued warring with the colonists on money floated by the same financial city of London. The borrowed money went even into hiring men in Germany to serve as British soldiers. Because, the volume of borrowing grew large, some in the financial city reasoned that added taxation of people in mainland Britain to pay interest would bring rebellion into the mainland against both king and financiers. The stakes became too high for the financiers.

History begins in Glasgow

In consequence, the help of people like Glasgow professor Adam Smith was sought. Besides staving off rebellion at home, the other task was to condemn supporters everywhere of Benjamin Franklin’s debt-free currency.

Smith came up with a book in 1776. The book’s title, “The Wealth of Nations” inadvertently gives away the over-trumping Smith intended in the controversy that Benjamin Franklin had caused when he was asked about “the wealth of the colonies.”

Smith’s work was prepared after studying authors in Britain and abroad. It took up many themes but most importantly for posterity, Smith rearranged Bernard Mandeville’s “Fable of the Bees.” This story had become famous in the 1724 edition of Mandeville’s book where he drew an example from the bee collecting nectar to suggest that “Private vices bring public benefit.” Sanitising and sanctifying Mandeville’s theme, Smith converted it into a claim on the Invisible Hand:

He announced that every individual in pursuing his or her own good is led, as if by an invisible hand, to achieve the best good for all. Therefore any interference with free competition by government is almost certain to bring bad effects.

Adam Smith who proclaimed the Invisible Hand [picture]

Adam Smith’s sanctification of Mandeville’s ‘private vice’ theory performed three functions at the altar of London’s financial city:

(1) He soothed king and government – and helped towards a truce with the rebels;

(2) Smith left the financiers to fight another day (he, for instance, keeps from exposing the financiers’ motives that had catalysed the loss of the American colonies.) The financiers could rejuvenate by utilising other markets (for instance, they switched Britain’s “free trade” from cotton imports from America to imports from Egypt);

(3) Using the concept “Invisible Hand” Smith was creating a hyper-real association with the benevolent hand of the Almighty. He had contrived meaning for a Christian population, for comparison in this context, not a Buddhist population.

Economics moves through Petrograd to the Chicago Boys

Smith surmised that to expose the hand of finance capital, to let it be seen as a plutocracy or oligarchy, would at the time, court rebellion in the British mainland.

On the other hand, despite job losses everywhere in the world today, we don’t see rebellion on the boards. Does that mean sea change arose?

We must in part attribute this to the well-financed parade of Ayn Rand, the ideologue behind the monetarists and long term associate of guru Milton Friedman (and also of the USFed’s Alan Greenspan.)

She had arrived in the USA in 1926 from Bolshevik-era Petrograd where the avid viewer of silent movies had found promise in studying Social Pedagogy at university in Russia. Her environment was such that in place of the concerns of Adam Smith, she had immersed herself in nihilists who served up “Nothing Matters” to soothe those professionals who dissented under the Tsar. Reflections on nihilism are available in publications by Turgenev and other contemporaries.

What is nihilism?

“However, if I may say so,” Nicholas Petrovich interjected, “you deny everything or, to put it more precisely, you are destroying everything…. But it’s essential to construct as well.” To which Bazarov the Nihilist replied: “That is not our affair…. We must make a clean sweep first.”

Ivan Turgenev in 1862 novel ‘Fathers and Sons’

The Anglo-American heritage and background to the ‘Invisible Hand’ axiom was left somewhere in the attic as Ayn Rand went on to preach her doctrine of “God is I” (for no one else matters.)

If we were to try to give voice to her in relation to Adam Smith, her doctrine declares that the “Invisible Hand is I”. Her doctrine evokes self-adulation and self-promotion in the general population when by calculation, the first among equals, giant financial groups such as Citibank, J P Morgan or Lehman Brothers, gain the lion’s share. It is no level playing field. Sensing relaxed rules, fly-by-nights afflicted vulnerable populations world-wide. In Sri Lanka, a TV English teacher used his popularity with audiences to set up a finance company and then vanished into the night with his depositors’ savings.

The scriptwriter for these events, Ayn Rand, was a first-generation American. Such was the case for the parents of Milton Friedman and his frontline Chicago Boys (Chicago University arose through the finance/oil Rockefellers endowment.) In brief, we had aliens catapulted into Anglo-American heritage with its historical bases in the Mayflower Compact and the Magna Carta – and someone took aliens seriously. This gave rogue traders impetus because it unhinged the balance in civics and ethics that Adam Smith had intended.

Petrograd scriptwriter of statecraft Ayn Rand

Rand wrote opaque prose but her work led the parade because other campaigners allied with big money sponsored media reviews and successfully promoted Ayn Rand’s work in paperback edition for sale to students and academe on campus.

Over the years her marketers fused her self-adulation axiom with “self respect.” In a final phase, when Great Communicator Ronald Reagan arrived in the Presidency, Ayn Rand’s axiom merged with the story “Customer is King” (i.e. the familiar advertising claim.) It finally went out for use in media under headings such as, “Free to Choose.”

That crept into ethics and morality as [I am] “Free to Choose” [and the devil take my neighbour.] Out at No: 10, Downing Street, philosopher in residence Alan Walters, so mesmerised PM Margaret Thatcher that she exalted, “There’s no such thing as society; there are only individuals and families.”

Rand’s nihilist fable had annulled society and provided Reagan-allied PM Thatcher with steely self-righteousness to sell out her “null” constituency if she so desired (that is, after collecting the deposit of people’s votes at the elections.) The worth of her constituency could now unflinchingly become the influence that the PM’s office gives to the personas of Mr. Dennis and Mrs Margaret Thatcher. Still, that was only the thin edge of the wedge. The Ayn Rand axiom on neglecting community led on to encourage negligence on the part of countless politicians, state officials and market regulators. That gave the first among equals, the financiers, their 30-year tickets to run.

Safeguards against fraud

Joseph Stiglitz, a 2001 Nobel prizewinner, comments in part on the results of the negligence, “The pursuit of self-interest by Enron and WorldCom did not lead to societal well-being; and the pursuit of self-interest by those in the financial industry has brought our economy to the brink of the abyss.”

Financial fraud was a known phenomenon. Anglo-American statesmen had at home therefore long balanced Adam Smith by installing filters to block wrongdoers. The institutions that statesmen created to keep away the pursuit of dangerous self-interest include Fair Trading bodies and Securities Commissions. Later, shortsightedness generated by the monetarists did away with these filters against the creation of toxic waste.

Yet, even beyond that Friedman, during a descent from his corresponding Planet Me, was to confess that he had overlooked the rule of law as a fundamental requirement in transition to a market economy. Make a clean nihilist sweep first; ask questions about civil requirements later. J K Galbraith comments about his contemporary, “Milton’s problem is that his theories have been tried.”

Today, reports on toxic waste fill the same network media that promoted the Chicago Boys after Great Communicator Ronald Reagan went into occupation of the Oval Office.

Still, there’s more. Petrograd’s Ayn Rand had chosen to outbid revolutionary parties by offering a more radical human freedom. Using that legend, the Chicago Boys mired potential revolutionaries, peaceful or otherwise, in the ever-changing consumer choices that media advertising generates ? Windows Me, My Yahoo, i-Mac, i-Pod ? a wave of products catering for “me” (and not “you”!)

President Kennedy once said, “Those who make peaceful revolutions impossible will make violent revolutions inevitable.” If a peaceful return to a normally functioning economy is impaired, then today’s consumers will seek salvation otherwise. If high-end financial planning does not finally pay off ? to speak of the future hypothetically ? it is China’s central planning system that may save souls who in fishing trawlers and yachts, cast off from the US Pacific rim for China.

In Russia, on 6th April.2009 Vladimir Putin decided to place before the modern Duma for debate for the first time, the state budget. Considering his country’s available know-how, this step can prepare the ground for a salvation that includes activating the personnel of central planning administration GOSPLAN. It was set aside with subversive intentions by the USAID team gathered by Lawrence Summers. He was previously on the reform team that bequeathed Lithuania the highest suicide rate in Europe. Wall Street has seated a veteran guide of financial buccaneering as head of President Obama’s White House Economic Council.

Can we say “Yes, Wall Street financial planners will eliminate toxic waste creation soon?” Or perhaps an IMF super currency may help nations trade internationally if gold is stockpiled by bullion merchants as blueprinted by the 1930s Great Depression?

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel is now in the forefront of the EU movement to bring back rules so that the trade of nations can again flow undisturbed.  Yet, for many a nation survival will require careful rationing, supported by economic planning, to utilise food and other resources that are becoming scarce and expensive.

Coping with the recession will be easier in China. The Chicago school monetarists, who canvassed in favour of invasion by raiders, could not talk this large developing country into setting aside its planning system.

The Art of Distribution

May5

I recently signed up for a Napster account and was introduced to a completely new form of music distribution. I’m enthralled. It’s a concept that has been on my mind for years. What model would emerge out of the wreckage of piracy? Not to say that piracy is a complete disaster; I have endulged my fair share. There is some genuine merit to the argument that music should be freely distributed and readily available. Not necessarily from a moral perspective, but as a business model.

Free. Probably the most abused word to grace the millions of webpages viewed daily. It’s true, though, that nothing is. The true crime behind piracy does not lie in your bank balance, but that artists do not have control over the presentation. I have no problem making the argument that artists should be touring constantly. Most of the population makes their living trudging restlessly to the office each and every day. It would be impossible to count the number of acts I have paid to see because their mp3s were readily available. Not to mention the posters that line my walls from their shows. Brand Recognition. Loss leader. Whatever your term of choice, providing a service gratis to lead to a sale is legitimate. And it works. While not written in stone, it seems obvious at the present that many acts will attempt this route.

What concerns me, though, is how this model affects our understanding of the music. Purchasing CDs was a great pastime of my youth. Anticipation was part of the fun. Perhaps allowance was saved, perhaps a birthday gift used. There was inevitably a wait. Sometimes the music was disappointing, sometimes it was better because of the wait. The artwork provided context to the album, a context chosen by the artist. It’s akin to a movie or play – you only see what the artist wants you to see. It’s an important argument – made all too often, I know – but you also hear the full story when listening to a CD. Context. It’s everything.

Well, that’s not true. But I like to think so. Sometimes I have the habit of idealizing situations. So while context counts for a lot, so does enjoyment. There are times I don’t want to listen to ten minute muses, I want to hear that catchy melody that was stumbled on for the next song. Sometimes I just want your mp3. This should be perfectly acceptable, as long as the artists gets to present that mp3 in context. You should have to see their tour dates, that new t-shirt and their blog – they should provide you with that song. Singles don’t have to be relegated to a land lacking any context though. And that’s where the missing piece lies.

Mixes. I love mixes. Any type of mix.  I’ll give myself a seven out of ten for making mixes. Techno mixes are my favorite, their flow is mesmerizing. I love hip hop mixes because it’s rediculously hard to do well. There’s even art to the itunes mix – you don’t have to be a DJ. Through the arangements, the left turns, the shift in tones, the layers, mixes allow you a new perspective on a song and they can remove the mundane aspects of listening to one artist for an hour. Mixes allow a view of another’s frame of reference, they provide immediacy, accessibility, enjoyment and context. Instant access to singles will inevitably remain the main form of consumption, but allowing the artist to present them to you and allowing others to place them in the context of a mix can still provide necessities once relegated to physical media.

True Blood Seasons 1-2 DVD Boxset

May5

True Blood is an American television drama series created and produced by Alan Ball. It is loosely based on the The Southern Vampire Mysteries series of novels by Charlaine Harris. The show is broadcast on the premium cable network HBO in the United States. It is produced by HBO in association with Ball’s production company, Your Face Goes Here Entertainment. It premiered on September 7, 2008.

The show’s second 12-episode season premiered on June 14, 2009. On July 30, 2009, HBO confirmed that True Blood will be renewed for a third season.Alan Ball has said that he plans to start shooting the third season before Christmas 2009.

True Blood details the co-existence of vampires and humans in Bon Temps, a fictional small Louisiana town. The series centers on Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a telepathic waitress at a bar, who falls in love with vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer).

The first season received critical acclaim and won several awards, including one Golden Globe and an Emmy.

Series creator Alan Ball had previously worked with premium cable channel HBO on Six Feet Under, which ran five seasons. In October 2005, after Six Feet Under’s finale, Ball signed a two-year agreement with HBO to develop and produce original programming for the network. True Blood became the first project under the deal, after Ball became acquainted with Charlaine Harris’s Southern Vampire Mystery books.[5] One day, while early for a dental appointment, Ball was browsing through Barnes and Noble and came across Dead Until Dark, the first installment in Harris’s series. Enjoying it, he read the following entries and became interested in “bringing [Harris's] vision to television”. However, Harris already had two other adaptation options for the books. He said she chose to work with him, though, because ” really ‘got’ me. That’s how he convinced me to go with him. I just felt that he understood what I was doing with the books.”

The project’s hour-long pilot was ordered concurrently with the finalization of the aforementioned development deal and was written, directed and produced by Ball. Cast members Paquin, Kwanten and Trammell were announced in February 2007 and Moyer later on in April.[7][8] The pilot was shot in the early summer of 2007 and was officially ordered to series in August, at which point Ball had already written several more episodes. Production on the series began later that fall, with Brook Kerr, who portrayed Tara Thornton in the original pilot, being replaced by Rutina Wesley. Two more episodes of the series had been filmed before the 2007-08 Writers Guild of America strike shut down production of the 12-episode first season until 2008. That September, after only the first two episodes of the series had aired, HBO placed an order for a second season of twelve episodes of the show, with production scheduled to commence in January 2009 for a summer premiere.

Opening title sequence

True Blood’s Emmy-nominated title sequence was created by Digital Kitchen, a production studio that was also responsible for creating the title sequence of Six Feet Under. The sequence, which is primarily composed of portrayals of the show’s deep South setting, is played to “Bad Things” by Jace Everett.
Digital Kitchen wished to explore themes of redemption and forgiveness in the opening title sequence.

Conceptually, Digital Kitchen elected to construct the sequence around the idea of “the whore in the house of prayer” by intermingling contradictory images of sex, violence and religion and displaying them from the point of view of “a supernatural, predatory creature observing human beings from the shadows …” Digital Kitchen also wished to explore ideas of redemption and forgiveness, and thus arranged for the sequence to progress from morning to night and to culminate in a baptism.

Most of the footage used in the sequence was filmed on location by Digital Kitchen. Crew members took a four-day trip to Louisiana to film and also shot at a Chicago church and on a stage and in a bar in Seattle. Additionally, several Digital Kitchen crew members made cameo appearances in the sequence.

In editing the opening, Digital Kitchen wanted to express how “religious fanaticism” and “sexual energy” could corrupt humans and make them animalistic. Accordingly, several frames of some shots were cut to give movements a jittery feel, while other shots were simply played back very slowly. Individual frames were also splattered with drops of blood. The sequence’s transitions were constructed differently, though; they were made with a Polaroid transfer technique. The last frame of one shot and the first frame of another were taken as a single Polaroid photo, which was then divided between emulsion and backing. The emulsion was then filmed being further separated by chemicals and those shots of this separation were placed back into the final edit.
Eight different typefaces, inspired by Southern road signage, were also created manually by Camm Rowland for cast and crew credits, as well as the show’s title card.

Gary Calamar, the music supervisor for the series, said that his goal for the soundtrack to the show is to create something “swampy, bluesy and spooky” and to feature local Louisiana musicians. Composer Nathan Barr writes the original score for the series which features cello, guitar, prepared piano and glass harmonica among other instruments, all of which he performs himself.[citation needed] The main theme song is “Bad Things” by country music artist Jace Everett, from his 2005 self-titled debut.

Elektra/Atlantic Records released a True Blood soundtrack on May 19, 2009, the same day as the release of the DVD and Blu-Ray of the first season. Nathan Barr’s original score for True Blood was released on CD on the Varèse Sarabande label on September 8, 2009.

Both Nathan Barr and Jace Everett won 2009 awards from Broadcast Music Incorporated in the BMI Cable Awards category for, respectively, True Blood’s original score and theme song.

Marketing
The premiere of True Blood was prefaced with a viral marketing/alternate reality game (ARG) campaign, based at BloodCopy.com. This included setting up multiple websites, encoding web address into unmarked envelopes mailed to high profile blog writers and others, and even performances by a “vampire” who attempted to reach out to others of their kind, to discuss the recent creation of “TruBlood”, a fictional beverage which is featured in the show. A MySpace account with the username “Blood” had, as of June 19, uploaded two videos; one entitled “Vampire Taste Test – True Blood vs Human”, and one called “BloodCopy Exclusive INTERVIEW WITH SAMSON THE VAMPIRE”. A prequel comic was handed out to attendees of the 2008 Comic-Con. The comic centers around an old vampire named Lamar, who tells the reader about how TruBlood surfaced and was discussed between many vampires before going public. At one point, Lamar wonders if TruBlood is making the world safe for vampires or from them.

Several commercials featured on HBO and Facebook aired prior to the series premiere, placing vampires in ads similar to those of beer and wine. Some beverage vending machines across the US were also fitted with cards indicating that they were “sold out” of TruBlood.
housands of DVDs of the first episode were handed out to attendees of Midnight Madness, a special screenings event of the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival. Blockbuster Video provided free rental of the first episode of True Blood several days before it was broadcast on HBO. The video had a faint promotional watermark throughout the episode.

On April 16, 2009, HBO released the first teaser poster for Season 2. The image uses a perspective technique that shows observers one of two images.  A minute-long promotional video advertising season two, which featured Bob Dylan’s “Beyond Here Lies Nothin’”, was released via Entertainment Tonight in early May.
On September 10, 2009, HBO.com began selling Tru:Blood, the fictional drink that appears in the show. In real life, it is a blood orange carbonated drink, developed and manufactured by Omni Consumer Products, a company that specializes in defictionalizing brands from television and movies.

There is also a website for The Fellowship of the Sun, antagonists from the book series, featuring videos about hot-button issues such as becoming a vampire.

FX (UK), the UK and Ireland broadcaster of the series, launched an extensive promotional website for the series.
On September 15, 2009, HBO filed a trademark registration with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for a possible future electronic game based on True Blood.

On September 18, 2009, HBO launched a True Blood jewelry line in collaboration with New York-based designer Udi Behr. Inspired by the series, the jewelry will have a Gothic look and will feature sterling silver, polished steel, and rubies.
Cast and characters
True Blood employs a broad ensemble cast composed of regular, central characters and a rotating group of impermanent supporting characters. Though the series is based in the fictional town of Bon Temps, Louisiana, a noticeable number of the actors comprising the cast are originally from outside the United States. In an interview, Ball explained that he didn’t intentionally seek out “non-American” actors, but was willing to go anywhere he needed to in order “to find the actor who makes the character breathe.” Ball went on to explain that, in casting, there was more of a focus on who would portray the character in a compelling way rather than who would physically resemble the characters from the book. Noting that there’s a definite difference between the characters portrayed in True Blood and the ones depicted in The Southern Vampire Mysteries, he described Harris as being very understanding in terms of how her work was being reinterpreted.
[edit] Principal cast

The series is set within the fictional town of Bon Temps, Louisiana. The show acknowledges as reality that supernatural creatures such as vampires, telepaths, shapeshifters and other mythical creatures exist.

In the first season vampires have recently come “out of the casket” and many are trying to integrate, or “mainstream”, into society, a process made easier by the sale of artificial blood called “Tru Blood”. The main characters for the series are Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a telepath and waitress at the local bar, called “Merlotte’s”, owned by shapeshifter Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell). Sookie’s best friend Tara Thornton (Rutina Wesley) begins working at Merlotte’s in the pilot episode, and enters into a brief relationship with Sam during the first season.

In the first episode the viewers are introduced to the vampire culture via Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), who is rescued by Sookie when a local couple attempt to drain his blood. After drinking Bill’s blood Sookie becomes psychically connected to Bill, and soon after they begin a relationship.

Sookie lives with her grandmother Adele (Lois Smith). Her older brother, Jason (Ryan Kwanten), is a road crew supervisor and womanizer. The main mystery of the first season concerns Jason Stackhouse and the murder of several women he has relations with, beginning with Maudette Pickens (Danielle Sapia), Merlotte’s waitress Dawn Green (Lynn Collins) and his girlfriend Amy (Lizzy Caplan).

Jason works with Hoyt Fortenberry (Jim Parrack), and Rene Lenier (Michael Raymond-James). Lenier becomes engaged to Merlotte’s waitress Arlene Fowler (Carrie Preston), and is later revealed to be the Bon Temps serial killer.

Detective Andy Bellefleur (Chris Bauer) investigates the murders in Bon Temps and favours Jason Stackhouse as the chief suspect; when he is proven wrong at the end of the season, he falls off the wagon. Bellefleur’s boss is the town sheriff, Bud Dearborne (William Sanderson). Andy’s cousin, Terry (Todd Lowe) is a former Army veteran who works in the kitchen at Merlotte’s. Working with him is Tara’s cousin Lafayette Reynolds (Nelsan Ellis), who also works as a drug dealer, dealing in vampire’s blood, know within the series as “V”.

Tara’s mother, and Lafayette’s aunt, is Lettie Mae Thornton (Adina Porter), an alcoholic who undergoes an “exorcism” in the middle of the first season to exorcise her “demons”. She sobers up and kicks Tara out towards the end of the first season.

Humans who indulge in sex with vampires are referred to as “fang-bangers” and in the first season the main destination for “fang-bangers” is the local vampire bar called “Fangtasia”, which is owned and operated by Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsg?rd), a vampire who is sheriff of Louisiana, known as Area 5 by vampires. Eric employs Sookie to find a thief in his bar, but once the perpetrator (a vampire) is revealed and attempts to kill Sookie, Bill stakes and kills the thief to save her. Bill is thus punished for killing another vampire by being forced to create a new vampire. She is Jessica Hamby (Deborah Ann Woll), a seventeen year old girl. Once turned she proves to be a handful for Eric and at the end of the first season she is taken in by Bill.

Towards the end of the first season, Tara is involved in a DUI, following being made homeless by her mother, and meets “social worker” Maryann Forrester (Michelle Forbes), who agrees to take Tara in. While staying with Maryann Tara is introduced to “Eggs” Benedict Talley, to whom she feels an attraction.

During the first season the anti-vampire movement is represented by the “Fellowship of the Sun”, a Dallas-based church run by Reverend Steve Newlin (Michael McMillian) and his wife Sarah (Anna Camp). After turning himself in for his girlfriend’s murder in the penultimate episode of season one, Jason Stackhouse is recruited by the church.

During the second season, the influence of Maryann Forrester and the conflict between vampires and humans is expanded. Most of the cast from the first season returns and several new characters are introduced. Maryann Forrester is revealed to be a supernatural being with the power to influence humans, beginning with Tara and Eggs, but soon spreading to the whole town of Bon Temps.

Sookie is recruited by Eric to investigate the disappearance of a vampire in Dallas. Godric (Allan Hyde) is a vampire over two thousand years old who is kidnapped by the Fellowship of the Sun, although it is later revealed he gave himself willingly in an attempt to calm relations between the two species.

In Bon Temps, Daphne Landry (Ashley Jones) joins Merlotte’s as a new waitress, though she later reveals to Sam that she is a shapeshifter. At the Fellowship of the Sun camp Jason meets a rival called Luke McDonald (Wes Brown), who competes against Jason. At Fangtasia Eric Northman’s second in command Pam (Kristin Bauer) gets an expanded role, and in the middle of the second season she approaches Lafayette and tells him to begin selling “V” for Eric.

Bill’s maker Lorena (Mariana Klaveno) returns for a mid-season arc, where she tries to get Bill to admit his love for her; she later reveals that she never stopped loving him after the split. In Dallas we are also introduced to Godric’s lieutenant Isabel (Valerie Cruz) and her human lover Hugo (Christopher Gartin). Also in Dallas the public face of the American Vampire League, Nan Flanagan (Jessica Tuck) finally meets Sookie and Bill, having previously only being shown on television programs.

In the penultimate episode of the second season the vampire queen of Louisiana Sophie-Anne (Evan Rachel Wood) is introduced. Both Bill and Eric visit her in an attempt to find out how to defeat Maryann.

Plot

Following the creation of synthetic blood, vampires have progressed from legendary monsters to fellow citizens overnight. Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) is a telepath and waitress at Merlotte’s in the small Louisiana town of Bon Temps, owned by Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell), a shapeshifter—though this secret is kept hidden. One night, Sookie meets Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), a handsome 173-year-old vampire who has returned to Bon Temps following the death of his last remaining relative. As she cannot hear his thoughts, she finds it easy to be in his company and, over the first season, the two become romantically involved.
Season one

The main mystery of the first season concerns the murders of women connected to Sookie’s brother, Jason (Ryan Kwanten). Maudette Pickens and Dawn Green are both strangled shortly after having been alone with Jason. Though Detective Bellefleur has little doubt that Jason is the killer, the town sheriff does not suspect him. Jason and Sookie’s grandmother is murdered shortly afterward. At the end of the season it is revealed that Arlene Fowler’s fiancé, Rene Lenier, is actually a man named Drew Marshall who created a fake identity, Cajun accent and all. He has been killing women he considers “fang-bangers”.

The first season also focuses on Sookie’s relationship with Bill and Sam’s relationship with Sookie’s friend Tara. Bill explains the rules of being a vampire to Sookie and, after he finds himself killing a vampire to defend Sookie, he is forced to turn a young girl, Jessica, as punishment. In the last episode of the season, this new vampire is left with Bill under his care. After Maudette and Dawn’s murders, Jason becomes addicted to vampire blood and has a short relationship with another addict, Amy Burley, which ends when she is murdered by Drew. Season one ends with the discovery of a body in Detective Andy Bellefleur’s car in Merlotte’s parking lot. The first episode of season two reveals the body to be that of Miss Jeannette, the drugstore clerk who has given phony exorcisms to Tara and her mother.
Season two
Main article: True Blood (season 2)

Season two centers on the disappearance of the 2,000-year old vampire Sheriff of Area 9, Godric (Allan Hyde). Eric enlists Sookie’s and Bill’s aid in finding Godric. With Sookie and Bill in Dallas, a supernatural Maenad named Maryann causes mayhem in Bon Temps.

Reception
Critical reception of True Blood has generally been favorable, despite the fact that initial impressions were mixed. The New York Post critic wrote of the opening episodes: “If HBO’s new vampire show is any indication, there would still be countless deaths – especially among vampire hunters and the viewers who love them – because everyone would be dying of boredom. And so it is with HBO’s new series from death-obsessed Alan Ball, creator of the legendary Six Feet Under, whose new show True Blood, won’t so much make your blood run cold as it will leave you cold.”

Whereas USA Today concluded: “Sexy, witty and unabashedly peculiar, True Blood is a blood-drenched Southern Gothic romantic parable set in a world where vampires are out and about and campaigning for equal rights. Part mystery, part fantasy, part comedy, and all wildly imaginative exaggeration, [True] Blood proves that there’s still vibrant life — or death — left in the ’star-crossed cute lovers’ paradigm. You just have to know where to stake your romantic claim.”

By the end of the first season, True Blood had a score of 64, indicating generally favorable reviews, on Metacritic, an aggregator of critical responses.  The second season received a more favorable score of 74 on Metacritic.

In Sandton, there is a marvellous selection of entertainment venues, bars, night clubs and restaurants. After all, Sandton is the entertainment capital of Johannesburg and brief review of some noteworthy venues is in order, of course staying in a Sandton hotel places you in the hub off all this activity and well, in the butter so to speak.
